Dry Risers for Fire Fighting

Dry Risers Factsheet

Dry Risers are systems installed into buildings for fire fighting purposes by trained personnel. This system of dry pipework is charged by fire fighters with water from their pumps to get water where they need it as quickly as possible in the building. They won’t spend time dragging heavy hoses around which will also break fire compartment barriers.

Mist vs. Sprinklers

Both systems suppress or extinguish fires with water. Both systems can be used in automatic systems, dry or wet pip application in local or area protection. With these similarities, however sprinkler and mist systems do have differences that are listed in this attached document.

How Sprinklers Work Factsheet

Fire sprinklers work by detecting a fire at its earliest stages and are set to operate before the fire can get large enough to be life threatening. This is done by a temperature sensitive glass bulb that will break releasing a plug that holds back water.

Sprinkler Myths
